The Truckee River begins its journey from Lake Tahoe’s only outlet at the Tahoe City dam. From there it is joined by creeks, streams and rivers on the way to its final destination, Pyramid Lake in Nevada. Along the way it is an enchanting ribbon of beauty… used as source of enjoyment for sightseers, rafters, kayakers and fishing enthusiasts as well as a backdrop for homes and small subdivisions. State Route 89 has replaced the old narrow gauge rail line that linked Lake Tahoe with the trains leading to the Bay Area, Reno and parts beyond. From Tahoe City to Truckee the river passes River Ranch at the base of Alpine Meadows, then Squaw Valley & Olympic Valley. After its journey through Truckee, the river follows the steep canyons of I-80 through quaint communities and into Nevada.
